Here’s a conversation that Sam had with Volvo senior technical leader Mikael Ljung Aust on the driver understanding system in the new EX90. The interview was originally published in the Patreon feed back in 2022 and then we forgot to publish here until now. With the first reviews of the EX90 coming in shortly, we felt it’s a good time to catch up. Wheel Bearings has launched a Patreon. This week Nicole is having a seriously fun time with the 2023 Honda Civic Type-Rrrrr! Robbie is also having fun with a car that surprisingly fits both him and his bass guitar, the Mazda Miata Club. Sam actually had a great Electrify America charging experience with the Genesis GV70 Electrified. In the news, it appears that VW may be getting ready to launch an electric GTI. Toyota revealed the all-new Land Cruiser which is basically a more affordable and arguably better looking version of the Lexus GX and is finally bringing the plug-in hybrid Lexus RX450h+ to America. Speaking of America, we’ve poisoned Britain with our preference for SUVs over cars so Volvo is going to stop selling cars in the UK. Mazda couldn’t find enough American buyers for the MX-30 so it’s discontinuing it here. Henrik Fisker should off a bunch of upcoming products… Read More »Just A Boondogle

It’s been a busy week. Sam had both the Dodge Hornet GT+ and the Hyundai Santa Fe plug-in hybrid. Robbie finally gets to talk about the driving the Kia EV9 and also the Seltos. He also discusses an unfortunate crash while going to pickup guitar picks. Nicole drove to Accord to drive the Accord. In the news, Nicole and Sam both drove the refreshed 2024 Jeep Wrangler. Volvo and Polestar announced that both brands would switch to the NACS charging connector and SAE will integrate the connector into its industry standard. Lordstown Motors finally goes bankrupt and sues Foxconn. Ford defeated Lordstown in the electric pickup race, but is losing customer orders due to price hikes. GM is matching and exceeding Ford’s bidirectional charging offerings with Ultium Home. Italian lawmakers are wisely trying to ban inexperienced drivers from overpowered cars. This week in the garage Roberto drove a car that we agree is basically interchangeable cross-shopped with the Hyundai Accent, it’s the new 2022 Mercedes-Benz S-Class. Meanwhile, Nicole had Kia’s new “not-a-minivan” minivan, the 2022 Carnival which replaces the Sedona with slightly more crossover-ish styling. Sam drives the latest sedan from the Acura, the 2021 TLX A-Spec. In the news, some early deliveries of the new Jeep Grand Cherokee L may get delayed due to flooding in a storage lot near the Detroit plant and the Woodward Dream Cruise is returning this August with sponsorship from Ford. Honda has announced the name of the upcoming electric crossover that GM will build for it starting in early 2024, it’s the Prologue. Finally Volvo decides to make lidar a standard feature on the next-generation electric XC90 coming in 2022. We answer some listener questions and Roberto tempers… Read More »Just a Basic Entry Level Sedan

This week, location and schedule constraints meant that the show was recorded in two parts. Sam talked with Rebecca while she was on vacation in India and then picked up later with Dan back in his native time zone. Sam drove the Hyundai Kona Electric and Rebecca describes transportation in India. Tesla made some news just hours before recording by finally releasing the mythical $35,000 model 3 and simultaneously announcing the closure of almost all of its stores. Being in India gives Rebecca some insight into why Ford’s adoption of What3Words is meaningful. Meanwhile back in New England, Dan has been driving the 2019 Volkswagen Golf SE and pondering the big Detroit plant investment announcement that Fiat Chrysler made this week. Dan and Sam also dive into the new Polestar 2 and we get an update on US availability of the Volkswagen Arteon. For automotive… Read More »Episode #099 – Live From The Sub-Continent

This time out, Sam is recording from a hotel room in Miami as we discuss the Volvo XC40 T5 and its goofy shifter design, the Audi Q5 and its surprisingly fast handwriting recognition and the marvelous Kia Stinger. Subscriptions may or may not be the future of car buying, assuming car buying even has a future in an age of automated vehicles. Faraday almost certainly has no Future and Walmart joins Ford’s automated delivery test program. 2019 Volvo XC40 – The New Small Swede With Surprising Value

The first-phase of the ground up revamp of the entire Volvo product portfolio is nearing completion. Like most brands, Volvo has shifted heavily toward utility vehicles such as the midsize and large XC60 and XC90 as well as the slightly higher riding car variants like the V90 Cross-country. This year Volvo finally has an entry in the fast growing compact utility segment as well with the new XC40 and it has a lot to recommend it. The delay between episodes is always Dan’s fault. Most of the miles were put on this week via 737-700s and a rental Kia Soul. Sam was busy paying attention to all of the automotive goings-on, including leadership shuffles at General Motors, and Ford’s latest real estate investment in Detroit’s Corktown neighborhood, while also finding time to drive the 2019 Honda Insight. Because it’s been a while, there’s also a plethora of cars we’ve been driving. Sam was in the 2018 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV and the 2018 Nissan Leaf while Dan tried out the 2019 Ram 1500 Laramie and the 2018 Lincoln Navigator Black Label.   Links First Drive of the 2019 Honda Insight Ford Buys a Train Station Dan Ammann and Mark Reuss shift responsibilities at GM Volvo has a new US plant   Wheel Bearings has launched a Patreon. This week Dan marvels at the stunning build quality of the beautifully sculpted Infiniti Q60 coupe (something Tesla seems fundamentally incapable of accomplishing). In discussing the Volvo V90, Sam demonstrates why auto journalists love wagons so much (bring on the new V60 please!). Then the guys dive into Ford’s new product strategy and all of the upcoming hybrids, the refined new Ram 1500 and GM’s call for higher-octane gasoline. Finally, Dan has a chat with Zach Bowman.
